Treading on the Earth lightly – art, walking and the act of remembering

How can art bring embodiment and environmental awareness back into such trivial actions as walking?

“We were once enwombed in the earth and the silence of the body remembers that dark, inner longing. Fashioned from clay, we carry the memory of the earth. Ancient, forgotten things stir within our hearts, memories from the time before the mind was born. Within us are depths that keep watch. These are depths that no words can trawl or light unriddle.” – John O’Donohue

Can one explore the notion of treading lightly on the earth beyond the everyday suburban rush to elsewhere, and acknowledge the ground underfoot in each step? This land art installation was an invitation to step back into a liminal space, and ancestral knowing of acknowledging the creative force of nature underfoot. Each bowl was an invitation to consider each step as a gravitational meeting with the ground, a solid presence holding millions of years of geological memory.

Land art installation, Kecskemét Hungary 2024.
