The Earth element – working with wild clay in Hungary

It all starts with EARTH. I’m super excited and grateful to have started my fourth and final ceramic residency of this journey exploring ceramics and the four elements, as part of Arts Council’s DYCP funding programme, titled Earth, Water, Fire, Hands.

I am in Hungary at the start of Spring at the wonderfully understated ICS Hungary, a space created in the 1970s from an overwhelming desire for creativity in the constricting era of Communism, and an inspiring place to meet other artists and exchange and grow ideas was created.

This two year journey of working with clay and learning ceramics through this grant and exploring the different elements that make up the alchemy of clay has been one of such deep joy, challenge and learning and I am super excited to see what unfolds as I meditate and explore the Earth element, and all that she provides to me (and us all) emotionally, spiritually, physically and energetically.

Working within an animist framework alongside my personal work with Animate Earth Collective, connecting with the ancestral knowing that all human societies were all once earth-honouring societies, Each day is a prayer to Earth as I shape, mould, paint, engage and work with clay in this wonderful, calm environment with the beauty of Spring surrounding me.

So much gratitude to Arts Council England for this opportunity.
